How to Make Elegant White Fabric Flowers

Make an exquisite white flower from silk or other fine fabrics.

Fabric flowers were first created as a means to capture the pretty blooms seen in nature and make them last longer. There are many ways of making such flowers, and you can use any type of material. But to make an elegant-looking flower, use a delicate fabric such as silk, organza or taffeta. The sheen and feel of these fabrics will lend a refined air to the finished piece. These flowers are easy to make and can be embellished with pearl or rhinestone beads.

Things You'll Need

  • White organza, silk or taffeta fabric -- 1/2 yard
  • Fabric measuring tape
  • White fabric pencil or tailor's chalk
  • Pinking shears
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Floral tape
  • Pearl or rhinestone bead

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out white organza, silk or taffeta fabric on a flat work surface, with the wrong-side facing up. Measure out 13 rectangles -- each 4 inches wide by 8 inches long. Mark the rectangles onto the fabric with a white fabric pencil or tailor's chalk.

    • 2

Cut out the rectangles with a pair of pinking shears. Use the markings as a guide while cutting out each shape. Cut rounded ends on the rectangles instead of the marked square ends. These will be used as the petals for your flower.

    • 3

Select one petal and pinch the lengthwise sides together in the middle to create gathers. Select a second petal and pinch it in the same manner. Lay one of the gathered petals on top of the other, while continuing to keep the gathers pinched in place with your fingers. Position the top petal at an angle to the first.

    • 4

Keep both centers of the two petals pinched together with two fingers on one hand. Add a third pinched petal on top of the second at a new angle. Then add two more pinched petals on top of the first three, varying their angles to fill out the flower.

    • 5

Cut a 7-inch piece of floral wire with a pair of wire cutters. Wrap the center of the wire over the top center of the gathered petals. Bring the sides of the wire together at the back of the flower petals. Twist the wire sides tightly together to secure the rosette.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 to 4 with five more petals to create a second rosette. But this time, wrap a separate, 8-inch piece of floral wire around the second rosette -- in the same manner as in Step 5. Then create a smaller rosette with the remaining three petals, and secure it with a 9-inch piece of wire.

    • 7

Hold the first five-petal rosette in one hand. Pick up the second five-petal rosette and place it on top of the first. Pull the wire stem from the second rosette between the petals of the first rosette.

    • 8

Place the three-petal rosette on top of the first two rosettes. Thread its stem through the petals of the two bottom rosettes. Pull on the wire stems of all three flowers to pull them together.

    • 9

Twist the three wire stems together. Wrap the wire stems with floral tape to hide the individual wires and create one slender stem.

    • 10

Place a drop of hot glue on the back of a pearl or rhinestone bead. Press the glued side of the bead to the center of the flower, over the loop of floral wire. Hold the bead in place until the glue dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hot glue a few silk leaves to the backside of the flower to add embellishment.
