How to Cut a Cropped Tank Top

Cropped tank tops are t-shirts cut to be more revealing. The bottom cut is higher, so the piece reveals more of the stomach, waist and back. Cropped tops are loose-fitting, so people often wear the style with a tighter tank or sports bra beneath the cropped top so the wearer does not reveal too much. The look is mainly casual sportswear, particularly during the '90s, though, it is making a comeback.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the t-shirt on the ironing board, using the iron. Make sure that the sleeve creases line up with the stitching on the t-shirt's shoulders, if there is stitching.

    • 2

Measure two to three inches out from the collar on each side, depending on how much shoulder the shirt should reveal. Mark it with the pen. The measurement should not touch or go beyond either sleeve seam.

    • 3

Mark 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch below the armpit area of the sleeve seam. Use the ruler to draw a straight diagonal line from mark near the collar on the left hand side to the mark below the armpit on the left hand side. Draw another line from the mark near the collar on the right to the mark below the armpit on the right.

    • 4

Measure several inches up from the bottom seam on the left hand side -- how many inches will depend on how short you want the top -- and mark the measurement. Make two more marks of the same measurement up from the bottom seam -- one in the middle and one on the right-hand side. Use the ruler to draw a straight line across the t-shirt, using those marks as your guide.

    • 5

Cut the t-shirt with the scissors along the two sleeve lines and the bottom line. For a scoopneck, cut along the bottom of the collar seam and remove it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the arm holes leave too much of your side showing, tie a knot in the tank at the shoulder on both sides to make the holes smaller.

  • Keep the t-shirt as flat as possible during the measuring and cutting process. The cuts will be crooked if the t-shirt is skewed. The shirt will tear easily if you cut the bottom too close to the arm holes. Leave at least one inch between the two.
