Observe how professional fashion models walk to get an idea of what's expected.

Walking like a model is harder than it looks. Professional models know how to walk to properly show off the movement of the clothes. Many models are known to have their own signature walk. They are often perceived to have a lot of confidence solely because of the way they walk. Whether you aspire to be a model, or just want to walk like one, getting plenty of practice is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of heels that fit well. Wear shoes with a 2-inch heel, if you are not used to wearing heels. Gradually increase the height of the heels as you get more comfortable walking in them. Keep in mind that models may have to walk in heels that are up to 7 inches high.

    • 2

Position yourself at the beginning of a long, straight hallway so you can practice your walk. As an alternative, use a long, straight path outdoors that's not frequented by many people.

    • 3

Adjust your posture. Pull your shoulders back and down, and keep your neck long. Face forward and focus on one point that's straight ahead in the distance. Hang your arms next to your body with your fingers comfortably pointing down. Push your hips forward so you're slightly leaning back and are less likely to hunch over.

    • 4

Swing your arms naturally as you walk forward. Allow your fingers to lightly slide over the outsides of your thighs. As an alternative, put your hands in your pockets or hold a bag in one hand; dangle the bag toward the ground, or hang it over your shoulder while you hold onto it with one hand.

    • 5

Exaggerate your stride. Lift your knee at least 45 degrees up in the air. Kick your foot out and place it on the floor. Make each step at least 1 foot larger than normal. Avoid looking down at your feet; look at your chosen focal point at all times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Videotape your walk so you can watch back the tape and make any corrections you see fit.

  • Practice your walk while wearing different clothes. As a model, you must be able to walk wearing everything from short skirts and pants to evening gowns and underwear.
