How to Decorate Full Mardi Gras Masks for Decorations thumbnail
Mardi Gras masks can be a fun craft for the whole family.

Many people wear masks for Mardi Gras. However, these Mardi Gras face masks can be attached to your walls to make festive decorations. Custom decorate these masks in the gold, green and purple colors of Mardi Gras, or create your own unique decoration. Full Mardi Gras masks cover the entire face, while the Zorro-like Mardi Gras masks cover only the eyes. You can decorate your venue with either type of mask.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the elastic strap or the stick to the back of the mask. You can glue the stick in place with craft glue, allowing it to dry fully before turning the mask over to paint it. The easiest way to attach the elastic strap is to staple it to the back of each side of the mask. The elastic strap provides a way for you to hang the mask on a wall without having to punch a hole through the mask to hang it. The only benefit of attaching the stick to the mask is for decoration, making the mask look more like many of those seen at the actual Mardi Gras celebration.

Turn the mask over and draw your design on the mask. You can freehand your painted design if you prefer, but if you aren't sure how you want your mask to look, it's better to sketch the design on it first. Common designs for the Mardi Gras masks include jesters and clowns, but others incorporate design elements such as lace patterns, feathers, stars and even animals into the mask design. Some masks imitate the drama masks and may include tears near the mask's eyes to indicate sadness.

    • 3

Paint your design using gold, green and purple--the colors of Mardi Gras. If you want to paint details on your mask, allow the base layer of paint to dry before you do so to avoid smudges. Details you may want to add to your mask include stars, lines, hearts, diamonds, eye or lip details to make the mask look as if it has makeup on, tears, swirls, feathers, lace designs or flowers. Set the mask aside to dry.

    • 4

Apply glue to the mask where you want to attach glitter. Working over a sheet of newspaper, pour glitter over the mask, tilting it so the glitter sticks to the glue.

    • 5

Apply glue to the mask where you want to apply feathers. Glue feathers one by one onto the mask. Set the mask aside to dry overnight before mounting it to the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure all paint and glue is dry on your mask before mounting it to the wall. This will ensure the paint doesn't rub off on the wall and damage or discolor it.
