How to Fix a Large Crack in the Wood Support for a Deck

- Bristle brush
- 2-part epoxy wood filler
- Cardboard
- Wooden stir stick
- Putty knife

Clean out the crack in the wood using a bristle brush. Remove any debris or loose particles.

Open the containers for the two-part epoxy and scoop out an equal portion of each. Start with a small amount, such as golf ball sized, for small cracks. Mix them together on a piece cardboard.

Press the mixed filler into the crack. Layer the filler so it is pressed right to the back.

Wet a finger or rag and wipe the surface of the filler so it is flush to the wood beam. The filler won't stick to a damp surface.

Used tinted wood filler for a subtle finish.
For extra support, bolt a metal support plate across the crack. Use one or two screws on each side of the crack. Predrill the screw holes so the wood doesn't crack further.
