How to Make Tulle Hats for Babies
Whether you're making a Halloween costume or an outfit for a birthday or Easter, your baby girl could sport a tulle hat to complete her princess look. In addition to being a fashion statement, the hat is also practical, as it prevents heat loss from the head and keeps the baby warm. When making a hat for babies you have to avoid making tight and heavy hats that could cause discomfort in your baby. Tulle is a light, thin fabric and can adorn a stretchy fabric hat. You can decorate an existing hat with tulle or make the hat from scratch.

1
Select a stretchy fabric. If the hat is for a colder season, fleece is ideal. If your baby will wear the hat for a summer event, opt for cotton.
-
2
Measure the baby's head with a tape measure.

3
Cut the fabric according to the size of your baby's head. The width is the circumference plus 2 inches for overlap, while the height is 8 to 10 inches.
-
4
Create a 1/2-inch fold on the bottom of the hat. Use the iron to press this fold and sew the hem. Use a sewing machine to speed up the process.
-
5
Fold the fabric in two equal parts along the height. Sew the ends together and along the top. Turn the hat inside out.
-
6
Cut a piece of 2-inch wide tulle so it can go around the hat once or twice.
-
7
Wrap the tulle around the hat and secure it to the hat with a hot glue gun.
-
8
Cut 2- or 3-inch wide tulle and decorate it with glitter, feathers or ribbons. Apply the glitter with glue. Sew on felt or fabric flowers or glue them on the piece of tulle. Allow the glue to dry after applying each decoration and before you move on to the following step.
-
9
Apply tulle loosely around the bottom part of the hat. Secure with a glue gun.

Tips & Warnings
Recycle the fabric for the hat using an old T-shirt, a knitted dress or a fleece. Any fabric works as long as it is stretchy.
Select the tulle's color to match the hat or go for a contrasting color.
Avoid applying beads or small items on the hat because these may fall off and your baby may swallow them.
