How to Make Corded Rosary Bracelets

How to Make Corded Rosary Bracelets thumbnail
Rosary knots or beads are used for prayer and meditation.

According to Friar Saunders of the Global Catholic Network EWTN, prayer beads have been used for meditation even before Christian times. Rosary beads or knots are used to count the number of prayers recited. While a full rosary contains the full rosary prayer--50 Hail Mary knots with four Our Father knots in-between--a rosary bracelet is condensed to 10 Hail Marys and one Our Father. A hand-woven rosary bracelet can be given as a Catholic gift and can be worn for prayer and meditation purposes or as a religious reminder.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one yard off of the 2.5 yards of nylon twine. Set this piece aside.

    • 2

Start two inches in from one end of the 1.5 yard twine. Hold the short end in your left hand and the long end in your right hand. Loop the long end of the twine around your left forefinger once, and hold both ends of twine taught so that they form an "X" shape.

    • 3

Wrap the long end of the twine around the finger three times, moving towards the hand and not the tip of the finger.

    • 4

Slide the coils of the knot off of your finger carefully, keeping them intact. Pull the long end of the twine through the coils.

    • 5

Hold the coils in place and order with your left hand and slowly pull both ends of rope with your right hand. When the knot is set in place, pull hard on both ends to tighten it.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 nine more times to create a total of 10 knots. These knots are called a "decade," and are "Hail Mary" knots.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to create an "Our Father" knot, only looping twine around your finger six times instead of three. This will make the Our Father knot noticeably larger than the Hail Mary knots.

    • 8

Double your rosary bracelet over in your left hand so that the Hail Mary knots line up and you're holding both ends of the twine in your right hand. Slide a Miraculous Medal through both ends of the twine.

    • 9

Tie the ends of the rosary together, securing the Miraculous Medal by looping both ends of twine together into a Hail Mary knot.

    • 10

Tie an Our Father knot about one inch down on the long end of the twine leftover from the bracelet. You will use this twine to make the cross.

    • 11

Weave the one yard piece of string over and under and over the long end of the rosary body, evenly distributing the lengths of either end. It should make an "S" shape.

    • 12

Pull the bottom of the "S" up over the top of the "S" and under the long end of the rosary twine just below the Our Father knot you tied. Pull this end over and through the loop created. Tighten both ends of the one yard twine to create a knot. This twine will be used to make the arms of the cross.

    • 13

Tie two Our Father knots underneath the knotted 1-yard piece of twine.

    • 14

Tie one Our Father knot at either end of the 1-yard piece of twine to create the arms of the cross.

    • 15

Cut the excess ends of twine off and quickly singe the ends using a lighter. Nylon twine unravels quickly but will stay together when sealed with a flame.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the coils get tangled or out of order when tying a knot, it won't come out looking clean.
