Instructions

    • 1

Wash the crates thoroughly with a solution of two parts vinegar, one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts warm water. Be sure to clean both the inside and the outside of the crate. Allow them to dry completely.

    • 2

Sand the crates with a medium-grade sandpaper. Wipe away sanding dust with a tacky cloth.

    • 3

Paint or stain the wood boxes in a color that coordinates with the fabric you've chosen. Let the paint or stain dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Measure the inside bottom of a crate. Use this measurement to cut a foam core piece that fits snugly on the crate bottom. Repeat to make eleven more foam core pieces.

    • 5

Add 1/2 inch to the crate bottom measurement and cut a fabric square to fit over the foam board piece. Repeat to make eleven more fabric squares.

    • 6

Place the fabric square face down on a flat surface. Set the foam board piece in the center of the fabric. Apply hot glue along the edges of the foam board. While keeping the fabric as taut as possible, fold the edges over the board; gently press down. Repeat with the other pieces.

    • 7

Fit the fabric covered foam board inside the wooden crates. They should fit snug enough to stay in when you turn the crate upside down. If they don't, add some hot glue to the underside and press down.

    • 8

Stack the wood boxes in any manner you like. Turn some on their sides and others on their ends to create an appealing display. Once satisfied with your arrangement, secure the bookshelf together using wood screws.

Tips & Warnings
