Bar stools make for comfortable and fun seating.

Bar stools add versatile seating options in a home. Placed next to an island in the kitchen they transform the island into a table. Placed in front of the living room, they help make the area a performance space. Bar stools are also ideal for parties and entertaining either large or small groups. You can make your own bar stools with basic materials and tools, and customize them to fit perfectly to any height or weight requirements. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two boards that measure 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 36 inches on the working surface, parallel to each other. Position between them two support boards that measure 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 11 inches, evenly spaced and perpendicular to the leg boards. Drill two holes through the outsides of each leg board and into each end of the support boards. Attach the leg boards to the support boards with 2 1/2-inch wood screws through the holes. Repeat this process for two additional leg boards and two other support boards.

    • 2

Set the two completed leg supports on their long, thin sides parallel to each other and 11 inches apart. Hold them in place with the help of an assistant. Place between the two completed leg supports four support boards that measure 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 11 inches, staggering their locations so they are not at the same level as the previously installed supports. Drill two holes through each leg board and into each end of the new support boards. Attach the new support boards in place with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 3

Turn the assembled leg supports upright on the working surface. Set a 16-inch-diameter circular board that is 1/2 inch thick on top of the leg supports. Arrange the board evenly. Drill a hole down through the circular board and into each leg post. Attach the circular board to the posts with 2 1/2-inch wood screws in each hole.

    • 4

Set an 18-inch-diameter circular board that is 1 inch thick upside down on the working surface. Set the assembled bar stool upside down on top of the large circular board and drill four evenly positioned holes through the small circular board and into the larger, being careful not to poke through the top surface of the larger circular board. Attach the boards together with 1-inch wood screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pad the seat of the bar stool with foam and cover it with fabric for a softer overall look and comfort level.
