How do I Make a Towing Trailer?
Anyone who owns a boat or a jet-ski, participates in automotive competitions like motocross or drag racing, or even runs a business that depends on the transport of lumber or other heavy equipment, will probably require the use of a tow trailer. With a wide variety of necessities inherent to such ownership and the specific needs of the cargo that is being transported, building a tow trailer offers a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a professional-built model.
Things You'll Need
- Steel Rods
- Wood Planks
- Cinder Blocks or Other Platform Device
- Axles
- Wheels
- Cutting Torch
- Welder
- Angle Grinder
- Tail light kit

1
Determine the parameters of the tow trailer that you need to build. The desired result should be a flatbed that is long and wide enough to safely transport the intended cargo. Consider specific needs to make sure the cargo can securely travel to your destination and be loaded and off-loaded easily.
-
2
Design the construction of the tow trailer and decide if trailer will be built from parts that you already own or using a kit. The availability of utility trailer kits can help speed the process along as they offer everything from axles, wheels, light kits and all the other necessary pieces and plans needed to complete the project.

3
Fabricate the frame of the tow trailer. Cut the lumber to the correct measurements that correspond with the steel rods.
-
4
Build the tow trailer frame. Place the rails on cinder blocks or another platform so you can begin to weld the outer frame in place. Make sure that the rods are fit within your pre-determined measurements before welding the frame in place.
-
5
Connect cross-rails to the outer frame by measuring and securing the position so as to distribute the weight of cargo evenly. The cross-rails will hold the lumber planks in place that will make the bed of the trailer.
-
6
Bolt lumber planks to the bed securely. Be sure to use the correct lumber for your cargo. In many cases this may require pressure treated wood planks to insure that they do not crack or break under the weight of your tow cargo.
-
7
Assemble the axle kit. Follow the included instructions for all steps of building the axle assembly if you have decided to purchase a trailer kit.
-
8
Secure the axles and wheels by welding them to the frame, making sure that the weight is evenly distributed among them.
-
9
Confirm that you have included working tail lights to your tow trailer. This is not only a good safety precaution but is required by law in many states.

Tips & Warnings
Depending on the size of the tow trailer you plan to build, this can be a difficult and dangerous project. Be sure you are familiar with the use of welders and grinders and are comfortable using them safely. Keep all children away from these tools and make sure to supervise them closely if they plan to help you with this project.
