How to Install a Solar Panel on Metal Roofs
Installation of solar panels on a metal roof depends on the type of metal used for the roof as well as the type of solar panel. “Thin-film laminate” solar panels are manufactured from unbreakable photovoltaic film, which attaches directly to the metal roof panels. If you have a standard photovoltaic collector panel, however, you will need to mount it on your metal roof using traditional methods, such as mounting brackets. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Solar panel
- Solar panel mounting brackets
- Hanger bolts
- Drill
- Polyurethane sealant

1
Measure the angle of your roof and determine whether it is adequate to enable the solar panel to collect the maximum quantity of sunlight. The panel should face south at an angle of between 15 and 45 degrees for the best performance. Choose flat or telescopic mounting brackets manufactured specifically for the type of solar panel you have.
-
2
Mark the position of the solar panel on the roof. Measure the size of the area for the panel, and measure and mark the location of the mounting brackets with which you will secure it to the roof. Clean around the position of the brackets, making sure that the area is dust-free and dry so that you can seal it thoroughly.

3
Drill holes in the metal roof at the locations you have marked. Apply sealant around the holes and then secure the bases of the mounting brackets using hanger bolts. Mount the panel on the brackets and fasten according to the specific requirements of the panel type.

4
Mount any additional panels in the same way and connect them into an array. Allow the sealant to dry, covering it for 24 hours if necessary to protect it from rain and moisture. Check it periodically to ensure that it does not deteriorate and allow water to enter your roof through the bracket boltholes.
