How to Dress Kids in Cold Weather
Knowing how to dress your kids for cold weather is extremely important. The goal is to keep them warm and comfortable when they are playing outdoors or heading to school in the cold. If they are not dressed for the cold properly, they can suffer from cold, chills and frostbite, and in severe situations they can freeze to death. Understanding the basic elements of dressing for cold weather will put your mind at ease, and you will teach your children how to be prepared for the cold themselves.

1
Wear a hat. Always. Fifty percent of body heat is lost through the head.
-
2
Cover all the skin. It's a good test before little ones leave the house to make sure all the body areas are covered. If it's extremely cold, a ski mask adds protection.

-
3
Layer clothing. Two or three layers of warm clothes are recommended. Air is captured between the layers, creating insulation. If it warms up a bit, they can always remove a layer.
-
4
Wear a jacket. Even if they think they will be indoors all day, you never know when they might get caught in a situation where they need one.
-
5
Wear waterproof boots or shoes with warm, dry socks. Warm, dry feet are key to keeping the body warm and comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
Do not wear tight clothing. It's a myth that it keeps you warmer. Loose clothing actually keeps you warmer because it breathes and creates air pockets, which insulate.
