How to Make Quilted Boots for a Baby

How to Make Quilted Boots for a Baby thumbnail
Quilted baby boots are warm and versatile.

Quilted baby boots make a good gift for winter months. Use a pattern to cut pieces and quilt the material, or purchase quilted cloth and simply cut the pieces to the pattern and sew them together. Quilted boots are good for boys or girls, and the material can be unisex or chosen specifically for the baby based on the parents' interests. Football patterns make good boots for a baby with a dad who wants him to be a kicker, while a pattern of tiny dresses would be appreciated by a fashion-conscious mom.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the baby's foot on a piece of paper, or estimate the approximate foot size. Leave 3/4-inch around the outside of the foot for seam allowance. This will give you the pattern for the sole of the boot. You will need two of these.

    • 2

Draw a pattern for the sides of the boot. The pattern should be half the distance around the foot pattern. Draw a line straight up about 2 1/2-inches for the back of the boot. The top of the leg should be 2/3 the length of the sole. Draw a diagonal line tapering to the toe for the front of the boot. You will need four of these.

    • 3

Cut out your pattern. Leave 1/4-inch seam allowance around the patterns for the boot sides.

    • 4

Pin the pattern to the cloth for the outside of the boots. Cut out the pieces. Repeat on the batting and the cloth for the inside of the boots.

    • 5

Assemble the pieces, three parts for each boot — a left side, a right side and a sole. Lay the outer material face down. Lay the batting on top of the outer material. Lay the inner material face up. Pin the sections.

    • 6

Sew each section individually around the outside edge of the material. Quilt the sections in a pattern, or just a diagonal grid.

    • 7

Assemble the quilted sections into the shape of a boot. Place the pieces together with the inner part of the boot facing out. Sew the edges of each piece together so there is a seam in front, a seam in back and a seam around the sole with the top of the boot open.

    • 8

Turn the boot inside out, so it is now facing the right direction. Take a small piece of material or ribbon and sew it along the edge of the boot opening to cover the exposed seam along the top of the boot.
