How to Import Outlook Express Rules Into Gmail

If you saved your Outlook Express rules -- also known as filters -- to an XML file before you stopped using the program, you can import those rules, or filters, into your Gmail account. Importing the rules will save you a significant amount of time when compared to the length of time it would take to input each rule one by one. After you have finished the import process, your Gmail account will have the exact same rules as your Outlook Express email account had.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Gmail account and click the “Options” icon at the top of the page, then click "Mail settings."

    • 2

Open the “Labs” tab -- not to be confused with the Labels tab -- in the main menu of the Options page and select the “Enable” option next to the “Filter import/export” setting.

    • 3

Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page and then go to the “Filters” tab in the main menu of the Options page.

    • 4

Click the “Import filters” link. Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the Outlook Express rules file on your computer. Double-click it to open it in Gmail.

    • 5

Deselect any message rules that you don’t want to import to Gmail and then click the “Create filters” button. Your Outlook Express rules will now be imported into Gmail.
