How to Connect Two Laptops with One AirCard

An AirCard is a cellular modem made by Sierra Wireless that connects to a USB port or PC card slot on your laptop. It uses a dial-up networking connection to connect to the Internet, so connecting your AirCard to a wireless router will not work. Carriers offer portable wireless hotspots for connecting multiple devices, but they require an extra line. The Windows 7 operating system allows you to share a connection between two computers using a special cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • You cannot use a standard Ethernet cable to connect the two laptops. With a standard Ethernet cable, the transmission pins on one connector are wired to the transmission pins on the other connector. With a crossover cable, the transmission pins on one connector are connected to the receiver pins on the other. If you have only standard Ethernet cables, you must use an Ethernet switch between the two cables.
