How to Make Felt Flower Rugs for a Barbie Doll House
Decorating a Barbie doll house doesn't require multiple trips to the toy store. Creating your own rugs and fabric items allows you to personalize the house so it looks just as you want. Felt doesn't fray when it's cut and requires no special finishing, making it a suitable material for quick dollhouse projects. Create the rug to match the traditional pink color scheme for Barbie, or choose different colors to suit your child's preferences.
Things You'll Need
- Felt -- 1 foot square of three different colors
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Needle
- Thread
Instructions

1
Cut out a 4-by-6-inch rectangle from a piece of felt. Use light pink felt to make the rug in Barbie's signature colors, or select any other color desired.
-
2
Draw a template of a 3-inch diameter flower, in any shape desired, onto a sheet of paper.
-
-
3
Cut out the flower template. Trace it onto a contrasting color of felt – such as hot pink, if you are using Barbie colors -- using a pencil.
-
4
Cut out the flower shape. Then cut out a circle -- about 1/2 inch in diameter -- from a different color of felt. Pin the circle to the center of the flower.
-
5
Sew the circle to the center of the flower using an overcast hand stitch. To overcast, push the needle up through the flower and circle, near the circle's edge. Bring the needle back through the flower just outside the edge of the circle, so you are only sewing through the flower in the second part of the stitch. Repeat the stitch around the entire perimeter of the circle, then knot off the thread.
-
6
Position the flower near the center of the rectangle. Sew the flower to the rug, using the overcast stitch.
-
7
Snip fringe into the two shorter ends of the rug. Make the fringe cuts 1/4 inch long and approximately 1/8 inch apart.

Tips & Warnings
Alter the shape of your rug as desired. Square, round and flower-shaped rugs also can be made. Round and other irregular shapes don't require fringing.
Finish the edges of the rug with a blanket stitch, if desired. The stitching isn't necessary because felt doesn't fray, but it adds a decorative element.
If you'd rather skip the stitching altogether, use fabric glue to affix the felt pieces.
