1
Measure the boundaries of the area where you want to install an above or in-ground pool, and note the length and width. Even if there are trees or other well-established plants, be sure to get accurate measurements of the entire area you want to dedicate to a new pool.
-
2
Draw the perimeter of the area where you want to install a new pool on graph paper. Use a ruler to create straight edges, and other drafting tools, such as a compass and fixed angles, to make drawing precise lines and shapes easier. Designate a certain measurement to each line on the graph paper, such as five feet, to draw your pool's blueprint to scale.

Pencil in the area where you want to install an above or in-ground pool within the perimeter you've drawn on graph paper. If you're planning for an in-ground pool, include approximate measurements of your pool's edge for a more accurate blueprint. Also draw in any other elements that will be installed with your pool, such as the layout of a deck, chairs, slides, pumps or other equipment.
