How to Convert .CHK Files to .OGG
CHK files are created after the Windows Chkdsk or Scandisk services finish scanning your file system for errors. These files were originally fully functional files that contained an error. No matter how small the error, the scan services remove the files from the hard disk and write them out as CHK files. The OGG file format is relatively fragile, so errors are common. If these errors are detected by Chkdsk, your OGG files are deleted and CHK files are created. Unfortunately, Windows does not provide a tool to help you get the files back. If you need your files back, you must rename the CHK files or use one of two tools to convert them to OGG files.
Instructions
-
Renaming the CHK
-
1
Use your operating system's file browser to navigate to the CHK file. One simple way to recover the OGG file is renaming the CHK file.
-
2
Right-click on the CHK file and select "Rename" from the resulting drop-down menu.
-
-
3
Delete the ".chk" extension and replace it with an ".ogg" extension. Press "Enter" to rename the file. This method works if you know exactly which CHK file was created from an OGG file. If you have multiple CHK files, you must use a conversion tool to find the OGG file.
Using a Tool to Convert CHK files
-
4
Open your favorite Web browser and navigate to EricPhelps.com. Click on the "UnCHK (Eric Phelps)" or "FileCHK (Martin Kratz)" link to download the tool.
-
5
Save the archive to a folder on your hard disk drive and right-click it to select "Extract All."
-
6
Select a folder and click on "Extract" to extract the contents of the archive inside that folder.
-
7
Copy one of the CHK files to the folder where you extracted the tool. Although this is not mandatory if you use the UnCHK tool, it's a good idea to have the CHK files inside the same folder as the tool.
-
8
Double-click the executable file to start the tool. Martin Kratz's FileCHK tool searches for CHK files inside its folder and automatically converts all of them to the original OGG files. It does not have a graphic interface and does not provide an option to select specific files, so all CHK files must be placed inside its folder. The UnCHK tool uses a built-in file browser that allows you to select a folder containing CHK files. Click on the "OK" button after you select a folder to convert the files. Converted files are placed in the same folder.

Tips & Warnings
If you drag and drop the CHK file onto the tool's executable, it is automatically converted and saved in the same folder.
