There are different ways to make food pyramids for school projects depending on the age of students and other factors. Using visual representations of food can help students understand the different food groups more effectively. The United States Department of Agriculture developed the food pyramid to help children and adults eat healthier by making smarter food choices. The six food groups represented on the food pyramid includes grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, milk and protein.

Step 1

Create a large pyramid on a piece of poster board. The pyramid should take up the majority of your poster board.

Step 2

Divide the pyramid into six sections, lengthwise, labeling each one the corresponding food group. Look at a picture of the food pyramid from the USDA website. Try to divide the pyramid as accurately as possible.

Step 3

Gather old food related magazines to make your pyramid. Cut out pictures of different types of foods.

Step 4

Glue or tape the food pictures in the section of the food pyramid where they belong. Fill up each section with different types of food for that section. For instance, the grains section can feature pictures of bread, rice and cereal.

Step 5

Decorate your food pyramid with color to make it unique. Draw pictures if you cannot find a photograph of a certain food in your magazines.
