Converting a portable crib into a single or twin bed is a great way to save money and repurpose what you already own. With a simple metal bed frame from any bed or home improvement store, and a little elbow grease, your child's bed will go from toddler to tween in a snap. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Each crib is different in its assembly, but a drill and an Allen wrench are typically all that you need. If you don't have a drill, standard Phillips-head and flat-head screwdrivers will work. If your crib has been assembled with Allen screws, you will need an Allen wrench to attach the rails to the bed frame.

There are four main pieces to a crib. The back, the front and two sides. Depending on the shape of your crib, the back will become the headboard and the front rail will become the footboard. Unscrew all the parts, removing the sides. The back and front rails are all that you need.

Once the crib has been dismantled you will need a standard bed frame, which you can purchase at a bed supply store, a department store or a home improvement store.

Attach the back of the crib to the bed frame to create a headboard. Attach with the screws supplied with the crib assembly or use bolts that come standard with the bed frame. Most bed frames come with bolts, washers and nuts.

You can use the front rail of the crib as a footboard; attach it just like the headboard. If you don't install it properly, it can be a safety issue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your crib's assembly is different or does not line up with the purchased bed frame, take the crib headboard and screw it directly to the wall. This requires a drill and wood screws, but can be safer and easier to install.

  • Safety is key when assembling furniture for kids. Make sure all parts are attached tightly and will not come loose.
