How to Fix a Hitachi GDR - 3120L
Microsoft uses the Hitachi GDR-3120L optical drive in its Xbox 360 gaming console to read and play gaming discs. Like all optical drives, Hitachi's GDR-3120L is prone to disc-reading errors that make it impossible for you to play a game. Depending on what is causing the error, you may be able to fix the drive yourself, although doing so voids any warranties you have on the unit.

1
Remove the game disc from the tray of the Xbox if it is stuck open. Press the "Eject" button, which is located beneath the system's disc tray. The tray should close. If the tray fails to close, visually examine it for some type of impediment that is obstructing its return path, such as cracked or broken plastic or a foreign object such as a paper clip. Remove the object if one is present and attempt to close the tray. If the tray cannot close due to a broken part, send the Xbox in for service.

2
Look at the front of the optical drive for a clear strip of tape if the Hitachi's tray refuses to open. New Xbox units contain this strip to ensure the drive's safety during shipping; remove the tape and then attempt to open the drive. If the drive still won't open, manually eject the tray. Unfold a paperclip and press its tip into the small "Manual Ejection" button located behind the faceplate of the gaming console. Remove the faceplate by laying the Xbox on its side; grasp the faceplate firmly and tug it free from the console.

Clean or replace the game disc if it won't load. Although it might appear that the Hitachi drive in the Xbox is damaged, a failure to load the game could be caused by a damaged or dirty disc, not a faulty optical drive. Wipe the dirty disc with a damp cloth and pat it dry with a dry cloth. If the game still fails to load, try a different game. The original game might be too scratched to play properly.
