What Do You Need to Add a Floor Air Vent?

A floor air vent consists of a grate installed at the end of an air duct. It allows you to control the air that flows into a room. A floor vent either lies on top of the floor or is installed flush with the floor. Adding one to your wooden floor requires a floor vent grille, measuring tape, carpenter’s square and circular saw.

Instructions

  1. Above the Floor

    • 1

Determine the size of the duct opening. This is the opening you will make in your floor. Set the vent grille over the floor where you intend to install it. Trace its outline with a pencil. Ensure that the dimensions of the grid are similar to those of the vent pipes. Alternatively, use a tape measure to find the dimension of the vent’s sleeve, a section of the vent that connects to the ducting of the HVAC under the floor.

    • 2

Score a mark on the opening with a carpenter’s square and a pencil, using the determined dimensions. Ensure that the vent’s hole is one-eighth inch larger than the vent. This allows for expansion and contraction of the vent.

    • 3

Cut the wood flooring to create a hole. Ensure that it is trim enough to form a tight fit between your vent and the duct opening. Set your circular saw’s depth to match your flooring’s thickness. Cut the wood beginning in the middle of the longer sides of the opening and finishing about an inch from the end. Chisel out the corners as well as the sides that cannot be cut with a saw.

    • 4

Set your vent into the floor. Sand and finish the floor.

    Flush-Fit

    • 5

Find the dimensions of the visible section of the vent, using a tape measure. If it has a sleeve that attaches to ducting of the HVAC under the floor, measure it to confirm that it matches the opening of the duct.

    • 6

Mark the duct’s opening using a pencil and carpenter’s square. Match the measurements precisely. There should be no space between the flooring and the vent. Position the vent over the middle of the duct opening if your vent has a sleeve.

    • 7

Cut the wood flooring, making sure it is trim enough for a tight fit between the duct opening and the vent. Set a circular saw’s depth to match the flooring’s thickness. Make a cut into the wood beginning with the middle of the duct opening’s longer sides. Finish approximately one inch from the end. Chisel out the corners to clear away pieces the saw wouldn’t cut.

    • 8

Add your vent to the subfloor. Use screws or construction adhesive to attach them. Sand and finish your floor.
