Tutorial for Jelly Rollers

Tutorial for Jelly Rollers thumbnail
Jelly rollers are an easy way to add bounce and waves to fine hair.

Jelly rollers are thermal, flexible rollers that retain heat to help you achieve natural-looking waves and curls and can help add volume to straight, thin or limp hair. Jelly rollers heat up quickly and can be easily used for both long and shorter hair styles. Clips are sometimes used with jelly rollers to hold them in place while the rollers cool. Even if you've used hot rollers before, wrapping your hair around a jelly roller can take a bit of practice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in the power cord to your jelly roller case. The case has an indicator light to let you know when the rollers are heated and ready to use. Jelly rollers are usually quick to heat up and ready for use after five minutes.

    • 2

Brush your clean, dry hair to remove any knots or tangles. Your hair needs to be completely dry, not damp. Use a heat-activated thermal styling product, such as an activator spray, to help the curl set more effectively. Spray the product on your hair and brush it through to help distribute it evenly.

Separate your hair into one-inch sections. Use clips to pin up sections until you're ready to work with them. Begin at the ends of the section and roll your hair around the middle of the roller. When you've reached the roots, twist the roller around to lock your hair in place. Lock the smaller end of the roller into the loop at the opposite end of the roller. Continue this process until all hair sections are rolled up.

Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the rollers to cool. If you have thick hair, you may need to leave the rollers in for a few extra minutes.

    • 5

Unlock the rollers and unwind your hair slowly, section by section, until all rollers are removed. Use your fingers or a pick to separate your curls into waves, if desired. Use a finishing product or hair spray for longer-lasting curls.
