Some software for the Mac comes without expensive marketing, packaging or support. In other words, it's inexpensive. Here is how to find shareware and freeware for your Mac.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mac OS 9.0

Step1
Determine what you want your Mac to do for you.
Step2
Check out two computer magazines for the Mac that offer CD-ROM discs each month: MacAddict and Mac Home. You can find them online at macaddict.com and machome.com.
Step3
Point your browser to one of several sites from which you can download shareware and freeware: Shareware.com and UltimateMac.com.
Step4
If you obtain shareware, pay the fee: it entitles you to news, updates and, sometimes, even product support. It also keeps the author supplied with pizza and sodas so he or she can continue to write such cool stuff for your Mac!

Tips & Warnings

  • Some shareware examples include Mariner LE, a spreadsheet program; EZgather, a database program; and Cinnamon WebMaster Suite and HTML Easy Edit, Web page editors.
  • Some freeware examples include Mariner Write (word processing), NIH Image (a graphics program), RealPlayer (a multimedia player) and Disinfectant (a virus-protection program).
  • Shareware and freeware often come without product support.
