Lace Edging on Blankets

Lace Edging on Blankets thumbnail
Use a sewing machine for a quick and easy blanket trim.

Whether you are making a baby blanket or a full-sized one, a lace trim adds a soft, feminine touch to enhance the blanket. Adding a lace trim is a fairly basic process, depending on the type of fabric and the size of your blanket. Once you have two even pieces of fabric for the back and front, all you need is a sewing machine and the lace trim of your choice to create your lace-trimmed blanket.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two even pieces of fabric flat on your work space, right side up.

    • 2

Line the edges of one of the fabrics with lace trim so that about an inch of the lace is laying on the fabric and the rest is laying on work surface. Use pins to keep the lace in place.

    • 3

Stitch the lace to the fabric using a sewing machine, on all sides.

    • 4

Fold the hanging lace over so that it is now laying flat on the fabric.

    • 5

Lay the second piece of fabric on top with the wrong side up. The right sides of both fabrics should be facing each other.

    • 6

Stitch along the bottom edge of the two fabrics to sew them together on three sides, and half of the fourth side. The stitch should go through both the fabric and the lace. Leave the rest of the fourth side open.

    • 7

Use the open part of the blanket to turn it right side out. The lace trim is now lining the blanket.

    • 8

Stuff batting inside the blanket -- if you chose to use batting.

    • 9

Hand sew the remaining opening closed to finish the blanket.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are making a blanket out of a thin material such as cotton, or satin, you will need to add batting to make the blanket thick. Check your local fabric store for batting.
