Cornrow braids can be created for girls of all ages. Although the cornrow technique is the same, these styles can be personalized by creating larger or smaller braids and using different accessories. When creating cornrow braids, it is important to keep your hands relaxed so they do not get tired and to not pull on the girl’s hair too much; you do not want to create breakage or pain for the girl. Instructions

    • 1

Moisturize and detangle all hair before creating cornrow braids. You may want to keep a detangling spray and moisturizing styling cream on-hand to make the process easier.

    • 2

Use clips and hair bands to separate the hair depending on the type of cornrow braids style you would like to create. The sections should be in “rows” going from the front of the head to the back; start with sections in the front half of the head and work backwards.

    • 3

Separate out a small section in the front of the section you are working with and divide it into three different small sections (as you would when starting any braid). The amount of hair used in each section will determine how large the braids will be, therefore, select a smaller section for smaller braids or a larger section for larger braids.

    • 4

Begin braiding the first small section of hair. When creating cornrow braids, the braiding should go under the other pieces instead of over, as in traditional braiding. Complete three or four “stitches” with this hair.

    • 5

Use your thumb and forefinger to carefully grab more hair from the main section to add to the braid. The additional hair should be about the same amount as you started the braid with. Add this hair to the “middle” section of the braid.

    • 6

Cross over the middle section with the other hair and add more hair to the new “middle” section. Continue doing this until you have worked all hair from the section into the braid.

    • 7

Finish the braid by continuing the braid under until the end. Secure the section with a hair band or barrette.

    • 8

Continue this technique over the remainder of the girl’s head to complete the cornrow braid look.
