How to Turn Off 3G and Still Get Text Messages on a Dell Aero
Any cellphone that has Wi-Fi and is capable of installing applications can receive text messages without 3G. The problem with the Dell Aero is that it runs on old firmware -- specifically, Android 1.5, which is not compatible with the app that provides texting functionality. Android 2.1 is required, and once you install it, you can send text messages through a Wi-Fi connection that won't count toward your plan.

Tips & Warnings
Use your finger to swipe to the third home screen and tap "Settings" and "About Phone" to see what version your firmware is.
As long as you stay connected to a Wi-Fi network, the texts won't count toward your messaging plan.
Click "Device" and "Check for Phone Update" to check for updates manually if the sync tool doesn't do it on its own.
