Reupholstering a Down Cushion
Thanks to a wide assortment of goose down pillow filling available online from specialty suppliers, you can reupholster a chair or sofa that has a worn down cushion neatly and efficiently. If matching fabric is not available for the cushion, look for a coordinating pattern that matches the décor of the original furniture. The original down from the old cushion can discarded or combined with newly purchased down filling for a firm cushion. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Old down cushion
- Scissors
- Large paper bag
- Iron
- Craft paper
- 1 yard of upholstery fabric
- Straight pins
- 5 ounces 600+ goose down
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread

Cut apart the old down cushion carefully at the seams, removing all stitching lines and placing the old down in a paper bag. Iron all cushion pieces.

Trace around all the pieces of the old cushion on the craft paper with a pencil, and cut out the pieces for templates.

Pin the paper templates to the new fabric with the straight pins. Cut out all the fabric pieces.

Sew the fabric pieces together, using the sewing machine, with the right sides of the fabric together, leaving a 6-inch opening. Turn the cushion cover to the right side.

Fill the cushion cover with the old and new down and hand-stitch the opening closed with the needle and thread.
