AVS Audio Editor 5.2 is a shareware audio-editing program for Windows. The current release version is 7.1, but you can still download version 5.2 from Cnet. The official developer's website no longer provides 5.2. You can use Audio Editor 5.2 to edit audio files, copy and paste bits of audio between or within files, record your own audio, apply effects, generate sounds and re-encode the audio in a variety of formats. You can open multiple files at once and use the Files pane to switch between them without losing your changes.

Instructions

      Download AVS Audio Editor 5.2 from the Cnet website's download area at http://download.cnet.com/AVS-Audio-Editor/3000-2170_4-11102329.html and install it by double-clicking the downloaded file and following the instructions on your screen.

      Launch AVS Audio Editor 5.2 after installing it by double-clicking the "AVS Audio Editor" icon on your desktop or by clicking "Start," typing "AVS Audio" into the Start menu's search box and pressing "Enter."

      Open an audio file by clicking the “Open” button on the Home tab of the ribbon and browsing for an audio file on your computer. You can also click the “Import From Video” button to import the audio track from a video file or click “Grab From CD” to import audio from a music CD. You can open multiple audio files at once and switch between them using the Files pane at the left side of the AVS Audio Editor window.

      Select part of the audio file by clicking and dragging over its waveform or select a specific point in the file by clicking once at it. Preview the selection by clicking the “Play” button at the bottom of the window.

      Use the “Copy,” “Cut,” “Paste” and “Delete” buttons on the Edit tab to edit the file. You can copy or cut parts of the file and paste them at a different locations or delete entire parts of the file. Use the Files pane at the left side of the window to switch between different open files and copy and paste between different files.

      Record your own audio by clicking the “Record” tab on the ribbon, clicking the “Record” button and completing the recording setup wizard. Talk into your microphone and click the “Pause” or “Stop” buttons to the right of the Record button to control the recording. AVS Audio Editor creates a new file for the recording; switch between files using the Files pane.

      Apply audio effects to selected parts of an audio file by clicking the “Effects” tab on the ribbon, clicking an effect’s icon and using the dialog that appears to customize the effect.

      Generate sounds or add text to speech by clicking the “Generate” tab and clicking a button on the ribbon. You can generate silence, noise, signals, chirps or text-to-speech by clicking the appropriate button and using the dialogue that appears to customize the sound.

      Save an audio file by right-clicking it in the Files pane and selecting “Save As.” In the Save dialogue box that appears, select an audio format, specify a quality level and provide a file name.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the “Undo” or “Redo” buttons at the top left corner of the window to undo operations or redo them.
