You can type in Chinese on your Mac.

If you need to type in Chinese on your Mac, you can use the Zhuyin input source. All new Macs running the OS X operating system come with traditional Chinese language input capability, as well as TextEdit, Apple’s free word processing application. You can enable Zhuyin input in Apple’s language and text system preferences and then enter text in a document by selecting Chinese characters from an onscreen keyboard with your mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Apple logo on the upper left of your Mac’s display and then click “System Preferences.”

    • 2

Click “Language and Text.” Select the “Input Sources” tab.

    • 3

Click the “Keyboard and Character Viewer” check box to select it. A flag icon appears in the menu bar at the upper left of your Mac’s display.

    • 4

Click the “Chinese – Traditional” check box to select it and then click the “Zhuyin” checkbox below it. Click the “Show Input Menu in Menu Bar” check box. This causes the Zhuyin option to appear in the input method pull-down menu bar. Click the red circle at the top left of the Language and Text preferences box to close it.

    • 5

Click the flag icon on the menu bar and then click “Zhuyin” from the pull-down menu. Click the flag icon on the menu bar again and followed by “Show Character Viewer.” The character viewer appears. Click the “View” pull-down menu and select “Traditional Chinese.”

    • 6

Click the flag icon once more and then click “Show Keyboard Viewer.” The keyboard viewer window appears, displaying a virtual keyboard with Zhuyin characters corresponding to the keys on the actual keyboard connected to your Mac.

    • 7

Click “TextEdit” on the dock of the Mac to launch Apple’s native word processor. A new blank document appears.

    • 8

Click the “By Radical” tab in the Characters Viewer and then click a Zhuyin radical in the left pane of the window. A list of available Chinese characters appears in the main pane. Click a Chinese character to enter it into your document or press the key on the keyboard that corresponds to the Chinese character mapped to it in the onscreen virtual keyboard.
