When surfing on the Internet, you might sometimes want to protect your anonymity by hiding your Internet Protocol address. To do so, one of the methods that you can use is a proxy server, which is a server that relays your Internet data. The AOL dialer application from AOL, Inc. can be set up to act as a proxy server. You can use the AOL dialer as a proxy server by creating an AOL account and downloading the right software package.

      Visit AOL.com in your Web browser and create a new AOL Mail account. To create an account, type your first and last name, select an email handle and a password and click on "Next." Select your date of birth and your gender and type your ZIP code. Choose a security question and type its answer. Click on "Next" again. Type the two words displayed in the picture and click on "Sign up."

      Download the AOL Desktop application from the AOL.com website. Double-click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program on your computer.

      Launch AOL Desktop by double-clicking on its shortcut in the Windows Start menu.

      Click on "Sign in" in the AOL Desktop toolbar, at the top of the window. Type the AOL Mail account credentials you previously created and click on "Connection options."

      Select "Advanced broadband settings" and click on "Continue." Choose "New broadband profile" from the "You are currently editing settings for" drop-down menu. Choose a meaningful name for the new connection and click on "OK." Select "Home network" from the "Connection type" drop-down menu. Click on "Save."

      Right-click on the AOL Desktop icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar. Select "Start AOL dialer." The program will now act as a proxy server and assign a new IP address to your computer. If you want to return to your original IP address, right-click on the AOL Desktop icon again and select "Disconnect."
