How to Use Lally Columns

How to Use Lally Columns thumbnail
Lally columns adjust vertically to fit the height of your space.

Lally columns are frequently called adjustable steel columns. These columns are often used as an intermittent, load-bearing structural replacement. For example, when remodeling a home, a lally column can be used to provide temporary support for a wall until a permanent column or beam is ready to be inserted. This ensures that the structure remains stable and safe while any construction or designing is being done. Although a lally column is traditionally intended for temporary use, it can be safely used on a permanent basis as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the space where you will be inserting your lally column.

    • 2

Cut a square base for your column out of plywood using a table saw. Your base should be about 13 inches wide by 7 inches high.

    • 3

Trim the shaft on the bottom end of the column using a saw. Slide a column cap over the shaft.

    • 4

Raise the column into vertical position. Bolt the column to the plywood base. Adjust the column so it presses tightly against the ceiling. Ensure that your column is evenly bearing the weight of the ceiling.
