Rate: (0 Ratings)

The shareware application CompactPro can compress Mac files, allowing them to take up about half as much disk space, and send them over the Internet - even to PC users.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • CompactPro (Mac)
  • Mac OS 9.0

Step1
Double-click on the CompactPro icon to launch the application.
Step2
Select the New command, or press Command-N.
Step3
Select Add from the Archive menu.
Step4
Select Convert to BinHex4 from the Misc menu.
Step5
Use the directory window that pops up to select the file you want compressed and converted (or press Command-G to select the individual file).
Step6
Click Done when you are done.
Step7
Select the Save command from the File menu. Alternatively, if you want to change the filename or archive location, select the Save As command.
Step8
Click the Save button (or press Return) to compress and convert the selected file.
Step9
Send the file as an e-mail attachment to your PC user. Your PC-user friend must have StuffIt Expander (or another program that can decode BinHex files) to decode the BinHex4 compressed file. StuffIt Expander is a free program for Windows from Aladdin Systems.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only your compressed file - not your original file - will be converted to BinHex4.
