  • Place the middle of each hump strap under the furniture item near the edge. Try to separate the length of the piece into thirds with the two straps.

  • Bend at your knees, keeping your back straight.

  • Place the looped ends of your strap around your forearms and have your partner do the same.

  • Place your hands flat against the sides of the furniture or around the corners to stabilize it.

  • Give your partner the signal to lift. Push from your legs to lift the load.

  • Walk the furniture where it needs to go. Take small steps, and communicate regularly with your partner to provide directions.

  • Position the furniture, lowering it into place by slowly bending your knees until the item touches the ground.

  • Remove the hump straps.

  • Ensure that all obstructions are out of the way and that you have enough visibility to see where you're going.
  • Some hump straps may loop around your chest or shoulders.
  • Never bend your waist to lift heavy items; this causes you to use your abdominal muscles to lift and puts you at risk for a hernia.
