How to Make a Calla Lily Arch Swag

How to Make a Calla Lily Arch Swag thumbnail
Colorful calla lillies are not difficult to arrange into beautiful wedding decorations.

Calla lilies have tall, curving stems topped by an elegantly sculpted flower head with petals of pink, orange or white. The long curving stem naturally brings the flower head into prominence when made into an arrangement. Native to South Africa, calla lilies are favorites for wedding décor. Calla lily swags are often used to decorate the arch under which the bride and groom stand to repeat their wedding vows. You don't need artistic talent to make the swag. While the project does require some time and patience, the swag is striking and makes for impressive photographs.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of swag you need to decorate the arch. You can cover the arch completely with multiple strands of calla lilies or use calla lily strands in conjunction with other décor. You may also choose to decorate each side or only the top center of the arch.

Use approximately eight flowers for each foot the swag line will extend. Make the calla lily swag the day before the event to maintain freshness.

    • 3

Use a sharp knife to remove the stem on a diagonal cut approximately 1 inch behind the flower head.

    • 4

Thread a strand of light monofilament line to a large needle. Tie a double knot at the other end of the line.

    • 5

Push the needle through the stem behind a flower head and slide the flower head down to the knot in the monofilament line.

    • 6

Thread additional flower heads and gently push them down to the end of the line.

    • 7

Space the flower heads approximately 1/2 inch apart on the monofilament line. Turn each flower head so it points outward and in a different direction to create a full look on the line.

    • 8

String all the calla lilies on the monofilament line to make your arch swag. Refrigerate the swag until the wedding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut the stem low toward at the bottom, using a sharp knife and a clean diagonal cut. Preserve the flower by placing it in a tall vase to allow for the long stem. Place flower food in the water.

  • Care for it properly and the flower will stay fresh and colorful for several weeks after cutting.

  • All parts of the calla lily are poisonous when consumed.
