How to Make a Pictograph for Kids
Pictographs are a fun and creative way for kids to graph information. A pictograph is a type of bar graph where small pictures represent a certain number of things. Teachers frequently introduce young students to pictographs as a way to learn about graphing simple data before advancing to more complex graphs, such as pie charts. The pictures help students understand the relationship between numbers and objects without having to read.
Instructions

-
1
Draw a large rectangular box on a piece of paper. The box will function as the pictograph area.
-
2
Create rows by drawing one evenly spaced horizontal line across the box for each member of the group you want to include in the pictograph. For example, to graph how many apples Susan, Lisa and Erin have, draw three horizontal lines across the box.
-
-
3
Divide the graph into two columns by drawing a vertical line down the middle of the box.
-
4
Label the left column, at the top, with the type of group you're graphing. For example, label the left column with "Name" as the heading.
-
5
Label the right column with the type of thing you're graphing. For example, label the right column with "Number of Apples" as the heading.
-
6
Write the name of one of the group's members in the left column -- in the first row, just under the heading. For example, write "Susan." Draw a number of small pictures in the right column of the first row, corresponding to how many things the member has. For example, draw three pictures of apples in the right column. Repeat this step's process for all the rows on the pictograph.

Tips & Warnings
Have a picture represent multiple things by adding a key at the bottom of the graph in the format: "Key: Each Apple = 5 Apples." Replace "Apple" with a picture of an apple.
Decorate the pictograph by adding a background and coloring the pictures with crayons, colored pencils or markers.
