Grab your favorite crochet hooks but ditch the yarn for some wire.

Crocheting isn't just for yarn -- you can crochet with almost anything that resembles yarn, too. Use jewelry wire for your crochet projects and you can make jewelry that looks complicated but is made from simple stitches. Customize the bracelet for a fit that's made just for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Jewelry wire, 20 gauge
  • Crochet hook size US K
  • Wire cutters

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the wire off its spool or coil and bend the end of it into a slipknot, leaving a tail that is approximately 3 inches long. Slide your size US K crochet hook into the slipknot.

    • 2

Make a chain stitch. To do this, bring the wire up and over the crochet hook from back to front (yarn over), catch the wire in the hook and draw it through the loop. Repeat this to make more chain stitches until your length of chain stitches measures 7.5 inches long.

    • 3

Join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to form a circular shape. To do this, insert your crochet hook into the first chain stitch you made. Yarn over and draw through both chain stitches at once to join them.

    • 4

Make one chain stitch. Start in the chain stitch from the initial round that is closest to your hook and make a single crochet stitch. To do this, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook to finish the single crochet. Repeat this in every chain stitch around the circle, then join your last stitch to the first with a slip stitch.

    • 5

Repeat step four a total of two more times so your bracelet will have four rows. Cut the wire 3 inches away from the hook; yarn over with the wire and pull it all the way through your current stitch to secure it.

    • 6

Use your fingers or a pair of pliers to wrap the ends of the wire around the stitches in the bracelet to secure it. Pinch with the pliers to bend the ends in and prevent scratching when you wear the bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add length to the bracelet and make it larger, simply add more chain stitches to your initial round. To make it smaller, take away chain stitches.

  • Add more rows (repeats of step four) to make the bracelet wider.

  • Crocheting with wire can permanently scratch your crochet hook, so you should reserve a metal hook solely for working with wire. Otherwise it will snag on regular yarn if you try to use it for traditional crochet again.
