How to Make Skittle Costumes

Food-themed Halloween costumes are a clever alternative to the traditional ghosts, witches and superheroes. Choose to dress up as your favorite flavor of Skittles, the fruity, colorful candies made by Mars Inc. A Skittles costume is comfortable, and there's no makeup or mask required. To make a homemade Skittles costume, you need to find the color of felt material that matches the flavor you like best. Skittles colors include yellow, green, red, purple and orange in bright tropical shades.

Things You'll Need

• 2 yards felt material, your choice of color
• Scissors
• Pins
• Sewing machine
• Iron
• 8-by-10-inch white felt sheet
• Hot-glue gun

Instructions

1. Lay the felt material flat on the floor and smooth out any wrinkles. Fold the felt in half.

2. Cut out the biggest circle possible — at least 36 inches in diameter — using scissors. Go through both layers of felt so you have two circles when finished. Pin the circles together so they don't slip apart.

3. Sew around the edge of the circle, using a sewing machine. Leave approximately 8 inches open at the top of the circle for the head, and approximately 14 inches at the bottom for legs. Leave approximately 8 inches open on each side for the arms.

4. Remove the pins and turn the costume inside out, putting the raw edges on the inside. Press the seams with an iron to make them lie flat.

5. Cut out the letter "S" in the distinct font of the Skittles brand candies. Hot glue it to the front and center of the costume.

6. Wear black pants and a black long-sleeved shirt underneath the felt circle.

Tips & Warnings

• You can make an M&M costume using this same technique. Simply choose felt in your favorite color of M&M and cut out the letter "m" out of white felt for the front.

• Make this costume for a child by reducing the diameter of the felt circle to approximately 24 inches.
