Thick socks make a loose shoe fit more tightly.

Having shoes too big for your feet can pose many problems. In addition to making walking awkward or uncomfortable, the movement of your feet inside the shoes can lead to blisters on your toes. Additionally, you're at a higher risk of tripping and hurting yourself if the shoes don't fit correctly. If your shoes are too large and you cannot exchange them, you can make the shoes more comfortable and safe at a minimal cost. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lace up the shoes as tightly as possible to see if doing so makes them tighter and more comfortable. If the shoes have Velcro straps instead of laces, fasten the Velcro tightly.

    • 2

Place one or more additional pairs of socks on your feet and check how your feet feel inside the shoes. Standard socks are adequate, but thick, wool socks are effective at adding considerable bulk.

    • 3

Insert a set of insoles in the shoes to reduce the amount of open space inside them. Insoles are available at drug stores. In addition to supporting your foot, insoles also make shoes feel snug.

    • 4

Test the extra sock and insole methods to determine what combination gives you the best feel inside your shoes. For example, one extra pair of socks and the insoles might feel better than two extra pairs of socks and the insoles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some shoes, such as those made of canvas, can shrink slightly when wet. Wear these shoes in the rain or wet them in your sink to shrink them to improve the fit.

  • Balled-up tissue or paper towel inserted into the toes of your shoes can also work if the shoes are considerably longer than your feet.
