How to Make Plastic Clay

How to Make Plastic Clay thumbnail
Plastic -- or polymer -- clay requires few ingredients and is simple to make.

Plastic clay is an ideal medium for sturdy, long-lasting sculptures. Though it is inexpensive to buy in bulk, those who are so inclined can whip up a quick batch using household ingredients. Also referred to as polymer clay for its use of glue, this substance has a longer shelf life and offers a faster drying time than traditional sculpting clays. Like traditional clays, sculptures made with plastic clay can be set in an oven or with an external heat source.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your work area. Don your pair of plastic gloves and arrange your bowl, glue and cornstarch over a protected working surface. Polymer clay is best created in a warm room, as cold temperatures do not allow the ingredients to mix thoroughly.

    • 2

Mix one part white glue with one part cornstarch in a bowl. Determine how much of each ingredient to add based on the amount of clay that you will need; one cup of each will yield a generous batch of clay that is suitable for small to medium-sized projects.

    • 3

Knead the glue and cornstarch together with your hands. Break up any chunks of cornstarch and mix it thoroughly with the glue. If necessary, stir with a wooden mixing spoon until the clay is smooth, relatively firm and free of any runny glue or fragments of cornstarch.

    • 4

Place the clay in an airtight container and store it in a cool, dark place until you are ready to use is. Refrigeration is not recommended, as it may cause the clay to harden and chip.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the clay is too thick to mold, add several tablespoons of water and repeat the kneading process. Add water and continue mixing until the clay is of workable consistency.
