How to Mod Podge Paper to a Light Switch

Turn pretty paper into a durable switch cover.

Dress up plain light switch covers by decoupaging decorative paper over them. Mod Podge, a variety of glue, works especially well for decoupage because it creates a moisture-resistant seal over the paper. It comes in either matte or gloss, so you can give the cover a shiny or a flat surface as desired. Decorate the cover to match the room's decor or wall covering, or create multiple covers to switch out seasonally or for the holidays.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the light switch cover from the wall by removing the two screws that hold it in place. Wash the cover with warm, soapy water to remove any grime or fingerprints, then dry it thoroughly.

    • 2

Cut a piece of decorative paper so it is 1/2-inch larger than the switch cover on all sides.

    • 3

Brush a thin coat of Mod Podge onto the front of the cover with a foam brush. Lay the paper over the switch cover. Smooth out any air bubbles with your fingertips. Allow the glue to dry for 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 4

Turn the cover face down. Fold in the edges of the paper, similar to wrapping a present. Apply Mod Podge to the cover and press the overhanging edges in place so they adhere to the back of the cover.

    • 5

Cut a slit from the top corner of the light switch opening to the opposing bottom corner, using a craft knife. Repeat for the other two corners to create an X-shaped slit. Fold the flaps formed by the slit inward and glue them in place. Repeat for the other light switch openings.

    • 6

Turn the cover face up. Coat the surface of the paper with a thin layer of Mod Podge. Allow it to dry completely then apply a second coat. The Mod Podge creates a water-resistant surface that wipes clean easily. Install the cover after the glue dries completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Substitute any brand of decoupage glue for the Mod Podge.

  • Create a collage-style design by gluing small paper scraps or photographs to the cover instead of a single sheet of paper.
