How to Obtain a California ID
When cashing checks, traveling by air or in a variety of other security situations, it is necessary to have photographic proof of identification. Photo ID cards provide those who are ineligible or those without the desire to drive a way to prove their identification in these types of situations. California provides ID cards to state residents of all ages as long as the correct documentation is provided to the Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Go to your local DMV office, as all first-time applicants in California must apply in person. The office accepts walk-in visitors or you can make an appointment for faster service.

Bring proof of your Social Security number. Acceptable forms include a nonlaminated SSN card, a Medicaid card, U.S. Armed Forces identification cards or the military separation document DD 214. Those legally in the United States that are not eligible for an SSN card are exempt from these requirements, however you must provide all other required forms and documentation.

Provide proof of your birth date and your legal presence in the United States. The acceptable forms include a birth certificate, naturalization documents, temporary resident card, visa, valid foreign or domestic passport, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services American Indian Card and other documents that prove your residency information. The document needs to have your date of birth and provide proof that you are legally in the United States.

Fill out the DL 44 form at the DMV office; copies are not valid. Your photograph will be taken in the office as well as your thumbprint. At the time of publication, the fee for the application is $26, unless you are a senior citizen over the age of 62, and it must be paid at the time of service.

Tips & Warnings
ID cards are valid for six years, while senior citizen ID cards are valid for 10.
