1
Replace dimming light bulbs, wash and iron curtains, and fluff up throw pillows. De-clutter tabletops, counters, sinks and other surfaces. Remove one or two pieces of furniture if they crowd the room. These small changes added together can help a room feel fresher.

2
Place one or two small bowls of baking soda in the room to absorb odors. Pour 1/2 cup of bleach or vinegar down stinky drains. Light a scented candle or simmer cinnamon sticks on the stovetop to give your room a fresh smell. A bouquet of fresh flowers also freshens up a room.

Rearrange the furniture. Put slipcovers on dated or torn furniture. Paint the walls with a fresh coat of paint. Replace dated pictures or wall hangings with family photos or bright colorful artwork. These kinds of modifications can give a room a completely new and fresh look.

Dust the furniture, including all the knickknacks and the tops of picture frames. Dust-mop hardwood floors, and use a wood cleaner to clean them. De-clutter appliance fronts, or clean them. Shake out rugs, and wash washable throw rugs. Shampoo carpets and furniture with a steam cleaner. Open the slats of window blinds, and run a damp rag across them to remove dust and dirt. A thorough cleaning freshens up a dirty, neglected room.
