How to Make Different Types of Emoticons That Show Up on Google Chat

Google Chat includes a variety of hidden emoticons that aren’t displayed in its emoticons menu. You can use the emoticons menu to set an emoticon theme and insert common emoticons, but the menu lists only a few. You can enter other, hidden emoticons, such as a kissing face, robot, monkey, pig or devil with special emoticon codes. Google Chat replaces the code with an image. Google Chat also includes images for other common emoticons.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a chat conversation by clicking a contact’s name at the left side of your Gmail page.

    • 2

Click the light blue, smiley-face icon at the bottom right corner of the chat box. The emoticons menu appears.

    • 3

Click one of the tabs at the top of the emoticons menu to set your emoticon theme. Emoticons you send and receive appear in this theme.

    • 4

Insert an emoticon into the chat box by clicking its icon in the emoticons menu.

    • 5

Make a hidden emoticon by entering its code into the chat box. For example, enter “:*” for a kiss, “[:|]” for a robot, “:(|)” for a monkey, “:(:)” for a pig, “}:-)” for a devil or “V.v.V” for a crab. You can also try entering popular emoticons into the chat box. For example, “>.<” produces a frustrated face.

    • 6

Send the message by pressing “Enter.” The emoticon image appears in the sent message.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can enable emoticons by clicking the gear-shaped “Options” icon at the top right corner of the Gmail page, clicking “Mail Settings,” clicking the “Chat” tab, clicking “Emoticons On” and clicking “Save Changes.”

  • Your contacts see the emoticons only if they’re using the chat feature in Gmail, iGoogle or Orkut and have emoticons enabled.
