How to Make Nook Color Into a Tablet

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color is a tablet ebook reader that runs on Google's Android operating system. The original version of the Nook software had very limited capabilities, mostly related to reading ebooks. With version 1.2 of the Nook software, the company switched to Android version 2.2 and added capabilities common to other tablets. The latest Nook software version can browse the Internet, send and receive email, and install third-party applications.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest Nook software version from the Barnes & Noble website. Save the file to your computer's desktop.

    • 2

Plug the Nook Color into the USB port on your computer using the USB data cable that came with the Nook. The Nook Color screen shows "USB Mode," and the computer detects the device as a removable storage drive.

    • 3

Click the "Start" button on the Windows task bar and select "Computer."

    • 4

Drag and drop the update file you downloaded into the Nook Color drive. Wait for the file transfer to complete.

    • 5

Click the USB icon in the Windows task bar to open the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" menu. Click the Nook to end the software connection.

    • 6

Unplug the Nook from the computer and wait a few minutes for it to go into sleep mode. The Nook will recognize the update file and apply it automatically, then reboot.

Tips & Warnings

  • The file is in ZIP format. Don't open the file or change the name, or the Nook Color will not recognize the file.

  • Don't turn off the Nook while the update is installing; make sure it has at least 20 percent of the battery life remaining.
