How to Run the Android Market on Coby Kyros

Shares & Saves

The Coby Kyros is an inexpensive Android tablet that runs an open-source, non-Google-approved version of Android that doesn't contain Google's Android Market, an app store where users can download apps for free or a small fee. You can add the official Android Market by installing an Android ROM that contains the official Google app store to your Kyros tablet, adding an element of functionality to your device that it is missing in its default factory settings.

Things You'll Need

  • Data cable
  • SD card
  • Computer

  1. Tap "Settings," then "Applications." Select the check box next to "Unknown Sources," then tap "Development." Tap "USB Debugging," then select "Enable." Press the "Home" button to return to the home screen.

  2. Tap "Settings," then "Wireless Networks." Check the box next to "WiFi." Tap "WiFi Settings." Select your wireless Internet network from the list of available networks. Enter your security passphrase if prompted.

  3. Insert your microSD card into a microSD card adapter, then connect the adapter to your computer. Click "Open Folder to View Files" when prompted. A window will open.

  4. Download Z4Root, a rooting application that will unlock your Kyros. Click and drag the downloaded file into the microSD card window you opened in the previous step. Disconnect the adapter from your computer, then insert the microSD card into your Kyros tablet.

  5. Tap "File Manager" on your tablet. Select "SD Card." Tap the Z4Root file to select it, then press "Install." Select "Open" when finished. Tap "Permanent Root." The application will automatically root your device, then reboot the tablet when it is finished.

  6. Connect the Kyros tablet to your computer via its USB data cable.

  7. Insert the microSD into the adapter again, then plug the adapter into your computer.

  8. Download "Recovery.img," an Android ROM, onto your computer. Copy the file onto the microSD card, then remove the card from your computer and plug it back into the tablet.

  9. Reboot the tablet. The recovery image placed on the microSD card will be loaded. Press the "Home" button on the tablet to scroll down and select "Backup and Restore."

  10. Press the "Menu" button to select the entry, then press "Menu" again to select "Backup." On the next screen that appears, the entry "Reboot System" should automatically be selected, otherwise use the "Home" button to highlight it. Press "Menu" to select the entry. The tablet will reboot once again and load the recovery image.

  11. Remove the microSD card from the tablet, insert it back into the adapter and then plug the adapter into your computer. Download the GApps Passion File from MediaFire and copy it onto the microSD card, then plug the microSD card back into your tablet.

  12. Reboot the Kyros tablet. The recovery image will load. Select "Install ZIP," then press the "Menu" button. Select the "GApps" zip file, then press "Menu" to select the file. Press "Menu" again to confirm the selection. Wait for the screen to say "Install from SD Complete."

  13. Select the "Back" button. Highlight "Reboot," then press "Menu." The tablet will reboot and the Google Android Market will be available.
