How to Make a Web Header in Pixelmator

Pixelmator, an image-editing application for Mac OS X, has all the tools you need to create an eye-catching custom header for your website or blog. If you've never created digital images before, getting your header looking just right will take some trial and error. It can take a lot of practice to make a header that looks clean and professional. However, once you get the design aspect down, learning to do so with Pixelmator is relatively easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the header dimensions for your website. For example, if your WordPress or Blogger theme supports custom headers, the theme includes information on any size limitations or optimal dimensions. If you aren't sure what the header dimensions for your site are, take a screenshot of the top of the Web page, paste the screenshot into Pixelmator, use the "Crop" tool to remove everything except the header image, then select the "Canvas Size" tool that displays the dimensions of the header images.

    • 2

Create a new image within Pixelmator. Use the "Canvas Size" tool to resize your image to the appropriate dimensions.

    • 3

Design your header within the canvas. The aesthetics and layout of your header are entirely up to you, but it's a good idea to prominently feature the name of your website within the design. Use the "Type" tool to write text. For graphic design, either paste in existing images or design your own using the drawing tools available in the Pixelmator toolbox. When finished, save your header as either a JPG, GIF or PNG file. All of these formats are commonly used in Web design, and any hosting service you use will recognize them.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have installed a custom font for your web header while Pixelmator is open, you will need to restart Pixelmator in order for the font to become available.
