How to Make the Page Stop Moving With Arrows on the Computer

When a page moves up or down automatically the page is auto-scrolling. You will see a single arrow in place of the cursor pointing in the direction of the page movement and possibly a dot between double arrows. Auto-scrolling allows users to rapidly review information on pages. Sometimes though the feature can make the pages go by too fast resulting in problems with viewing page information and extra scrolling to return to a page you missed. To make pages stop moving, you simply need to temporarily or permanently turn off the feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the page you’re viewing or click the scroll wheel on your mouse to stop AutoScroll temporarily.

Access your PC's Control Panel to change the scroll settings for the mouse wheel in Windows. Click “Start,” select “Control Panel,” enter “mouse” in the search field and then click the “Mouse” option. Click the “Wheel” tab and then change the “Vertical Scrolling” settings to scroll a set number of lines on a page when rolling the wheel, or scroll one screen at a time. When you're finished, click “OK” to save the changes.

Go to your Mozilla Firefox browser settings if you need to stop auto-scrolling in Firefox. Click “Tools” in your Firefox browser and then click “Options” on the drop-down menu to access the Options window. Click “Advanced” -- marked with a gear image -- and then click the “General” tab. Click the box to the left of “Use AutoScrolling” to remove the check mark from the box and then click “OK” to save the change.

Tips & Warnings

  • If pages scroll by quickly when you use your mouse, but you don’t see an auto-scrolling arrow(s) icon, then you’re likely dealing with smooth scrolling. Smooth scrolling replaces regular line scrolling, in which you manually turn the wheel increments to move from one page to another, with a smoother, more fluid movement that rapidly shows the pages.
