How to Make Flower Fennel Origami Quilt Blocks
Origami is the Japanese art of folding sheets of paper into decorative objects. It started as the ceremonial folding of paper certificates and later developed into an art form. There are many different styles of origami, and while folding paper is the typical practice, designers sometimes use other materials, such as cloth, to make origami designs. Quilt origami assembles blocks for quilting by folding and stitching sheets of fabric. You can make cloth look like fennel flowers in this manner.

1
Cut a piece of cloth into a square. You can choose whatever size you want, just make sure that the cloth is square.
-
2
Make a valley fold by folding the square into half, turn and fold again. Fold the cloth to make a “T” intersection through the center of your square. Use your fingers to press the edges of the folds.

3
Turn the square so it is facing you like a diamond shape. Repeating the process in the Step 2, fold the four corners into the center to make a “T” intersection through the center. Press the edges using your fingers to make a line mark or ridge.
-
4
Turn the square upside down keeping the triangle folds on the bottom. Turn the cloth again. You should have a square shape, instead of a diamond shape, facing you this time. Make a valley fold again and fold it up to the center. Repeat this process, folding the four corners of the square. Press the folds using your fingers to keep it in place.
-
5
Sew the sides together with a needle thread to hold the ears in place. Make four little tips tacked in the center of the square.
-
6
Turn the tips inside out after tacking them together. This process makes your design look like a fennel flower and completes your first block.

Tips & Warnings
Make several blocks depending on the size of the quilt you wish to make. Put the blocks together by sewing them together. Press the center of the block in, so that when you sew the blocks together you won’t sew the over the tips.
