How to Troubleshoot a Maxon BMR55

The Maxon BMR55 is a complex, column-style lift for trucks that you can troubleshoot on a limited basis, assuming the reservoir needs to be filled, the battery needs to be charged or a valve needs to be opened. Most other issues require a service call, though by identifying the issue beforehand, you will be able to save yourself a bit of money.

Instructions

  1. Platform Won't Raise and Motor Won't Run

    • 1

Check the pump motor solenoid for 12 volts of power from the battery. If the solenoid isn't receiving any power, the battery cables may be damaged, in which case they need to be replaced. If it is not damaged, then charge the battery.

    • 2

Check the solenoids in the pump box and columns for power by flipping the control switch to the "UP" position. If any other solenoid besides the pump motor solenoid powers up, then the wiring has been damaged and needs to be serviced.

    • 3

Inspect the device for structural damage. The improper bending of structures could potentially prevent normal operation.

    Platform Raises Halfway and Stops

    • 4

Check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir. If it's on "gravity down units," lower the platform to the ground and fill the reservoir to approximately an inch from the top. If it is on "power down units," raise the platform to bed height and fill the reservoir to approximately the middle.

    • 5

Inspect the pump and pump filter. If they are worn or extremely clogged, set up a service call.

    • 6

Check the pressure compensation valves situated at the top of each column to see whether they are plugged.

    Platform Won't Unfold

    • 7

Turn the port flow control switch labeled "A" counterclockwise to open the hydraulic oil valve.

    • 8

Inspect the "A" solenoid valve coil for power by placing a magnetic screwdriver approximately 1/4 inch from it. If the screwdriver is not attracted to the solenoid, your unit needs to be sent in for service.

    • 9

Remove the valve coil from the valve cartridge and use a paper clip to push the plunger inside the cartridge. If it does not move freely for approximately 1/8 inch, wash the cartridge in solvent. If it still does not move freely, have it professionally replaced.
